Nadur

The new Nadur Divine Mercy Cemetery was built on a slope within the northern flanks of the village. It features a centre sunken chapel with radiating terraces within which are located around 600 graves all pointing towards the centre of this chapel. The design of the cemetery is based on religious symbolism. The cemetery is divided in seven levels, the number seven being mentioned several times in the scriptures. Religious functions including masses take place in the chapel, with the Eucharist bearing a central place – hence all bodies are laid facing towards the chapel. The cemetery was designed as a garden with cypress trees forming the two main passages radiating from the chapel, various indigenous trees and shrubs planted around the whole perimeter and along the various terraces.
